Week Two
The Teaching of A Father
According to Deuteronomy 6, Moses gave Israel the commandments so that they, their sons, and their grandsoms would fear the Lord and keep all His statutes and commandments all the days of their lives. Moses instructed Israel to teach the commadments diligently to their sons and talk about them all the time-when they sat, walked around, lay down, and rose up.
Less than five hundred years later, Solomon obeyed this command with the hope that through the wisdom God gave him, his son might also feat the Lord.
Day One of Week 2
Read Proverbs 3:1-12,
Pro 3:1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments,
Pro 3:2 for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.
Pro 3:3 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.
Pro 3:4 So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.
Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Pro 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Pro 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
Pro 3:8 It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.
Pro 3:9 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
Pro 3:10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.
Pro 3:11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline or be weary of his reproof,
Pro 3:12 for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
mark references to God and the key words and phrases wise, teaching, commandment, understanding, heart, and my son.
Watch for the word so, which introduces the reason for the instruction that precedes it.(So is listed differently in the KJV than the ESV. This is the ESV version above. The KJV says...Pro 3:10 So shall thy barnes be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
It also says So in verse 4..so we will find favour.
Make a list of the instructions and prinicples in these verses. Beside each one, list the result or the value of following the principle. You may want to rephrase prinicples to firm up your understanding, and memorizing your words will help you. Over the course of these 13 weeks, you'll see many prinicples repeated, giving you an idea of how important God thinks they are for us to know.
1. Do not forget my teaching, let your heart keep my commandments. For it will add days of life and peace to you.
2.Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you so you can find favour in God and man.
3.Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding...he will keep your paths straight.
4.Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil....It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

proverbs day seven group discussion
What is the significance of wisdom and foolishness according to Proverbs 1-2?
What kinds of people are discussed in these chapter?
adulteress (which is and example of temptation)
Discuss their goal, their kinds of life, and their futures?
Those who are doing evil, will end of destroyed yet those seeking God and wisdom will be protected.
Discuss the idea of wisdom as a treasure?
It should be something sought after, considered valuable, and something you hold close to your heart.
It should be your motivation for getting close to God and seeking him out.
Obtaining wisdom is not something we should dread but desire, so we kind find the treasure (which is how God will use the wisdom to touch someone else)
What did you learn about the Lord in these two chapters?
you are going to fear the Lord ot btain wisdom
If you turn from him, he will turn from you, but if you seek after him he will guide your paths.
How does wisdom protect us?
with wisdom you understand righteousness and justice and equity every good path
How do wisdom, understanding, knowledge, teaching, and commandments relate to one another?
Its a backwards ladder, you first must obey the commandments, receive teaching and instruction to obtain knowledge, with the knowledge you must understand, Then wisdom will come when God gives it to us. But we must first do the first four things.
What application can you make to your own life?
Mine personally would be that I would seek God daily. That I will follow his commandments, and study and learn so that he can provide me with wisdom when the time is right on how to use what I have learned. I should also make sure that my kids are doing the same. A daily devotion time and prayer is very important for my kids every day.
How does this weeks study motivate you?
I have never been more motivated to study Gods working. understanding his protection over us, if we will seek him more. I am loving this study.

Proverbs Day Five and Six
Read the rest of Proverbs 2 today drawing a black cloud around evil and wickedness. Now go back to see how these verses tie in to verses 10 and 11. Underline parallel words.
Now list what you learned about the way of evil. What is the value of wisdom?
Pro 2:12 delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech,
Pro 2:13 who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness,
Pro 2:14 who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil,
Pro 2:15 men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways.
Pro 2:16 So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words,
Pro 2:17 who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God;
Pro 2:18 for her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed;
Pro 2:19 none who go to her come back, nor do they regain the paths of life.
Pro 2:20 So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous.
Pro 2:21 For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it,
Pro 2:22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.
It ties into verse 10 and 11, in that 10 and 11 states that when we receive wisdom and knowledge, we are delivered from the evil things. But first you must want wisdom, it must be something you desire in your
parallel words:evil, forsakes, forbidden, perverted, perverseness
It seems to me that it is easy to filled with evil if you are not filled with wisdom and knowledge. It is very important to stay strong in the word and strong in prayer. If not, don't be surprised when your life is destroyed.
The value of wisdom is the value of your life. If you want to live for Christ and reach out to others, wisdom is the key. Put on the full armour of God. Don't be fool, dont allow your to lead to destruction because you are to lazy to get into the word. If you study these chapters, and cannot fully understand the importance of getting in the word, then I don't know what can make you understand it.
DAY SIX......
Read Proverbs 2:16-19 and list the characteristics of the strange immoral woman:
A strange woman indeed! utterly estranged from all principles of reason, virtue, and honour. She is false to him whom she entices. She speaks fair, tells him how much she admires him above any man, and what a kindness she has for him; but she flatters with her words; she has no true affection for him, nor any desire of his welfare.
Read verses 20-22 and look for conclusions. When do you think these things will happen?
Part of these things will happen now, you are to walk in righteousness now, and seek wisdom now. The way you live now affects your life and its surroundings. If you live a wicked life, you will have a miserable life and not gain heavenely treasure.
Chapter 2 Flow Chart

Proverbs Day 4
Read:
Pro 2:1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you,
Pro 2:2 making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding;
Pro 2:3 yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding,
Pro 2:4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures,
Pro 2:5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
These verses are telling us how precious wisdom is in our lives. Its teling us that if we seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasure. That tells us the importance we must place on obtaining these things. Like in "Fools Gold" they are seeking for a treasure, and they do whatever they must do to get it and when they do get it, they do all they can to protect it. When it's found it is like winning the lottery. All of their hard work and seeking for the treasure finally pays off. We should feel the same about obtaining wisdom and understanding, we should seek and hold it close to our hearts, for when we are able to use it will be worth far more than any earthly treasure we may obtain.

Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
We only have beginning knowledge when we fear the Lord. Without the fear of the Lord we will never gain knowledge and wisdom.

It is so obvious the benefits of seeking wisdom. This lets you know he us is our shield. The wisdom we seek is not in vain or a waist of time, but something that protects and guards us and keeps us walking straight.
My Prayer: Lord we thank you for your word. Your word that leads us through everyday of our life. Your word that helps shield our lives with the full armour of God. Being able to use to help us through our dialy lives, to help us witness to the lost and hurting, to strengthen us when we are week, to comfort us when we are hurting. I pray that each of us will seek that wisdom everyday, and that we will treasure it and use it everyday. We thank you for your word.

Day Three Proverbs
Today we are suppose to first understand three Hebrew words for fool:
Keisyl-the dull, closed, stubborn mind that rejects information
Nabal-means no spiritual perception
Eviyl-is an arrogant, flippant, mentally dull, coarse, and callous person.
The fool found in Proverbs 1:7 is Eviyl
1:22 and 32 is Kesil
How does this help you understand these texts?
Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Lets reread this using the Hebrew description.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; arrogant, flippant, mentally dull, coarse and callous people despise wisdom and instruction.
So we are not just talking about laziness, arrogant can be someone who feels they can do things are their own without the wisdom that God gives gives us.
FLIP'PANT, a. [L. labor, to slide or slip, and to liber, free.]
1. Of smoother, fluent and rapid speech; speaking with ease and rapidity; having a voluble tongue; talkative.
2. Pert; petulant; waggish.
I wanted to look up Flippant, I think of it as someone who is carefree,talkative, but not with wisdom, kind of like a car salesman.
Callous, I think everyone understands, someone who is cold hearted. Maybe too hurt by the world to even give darn anymore.
now to verse 22
Pro 1:22 "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?
.........scoffing and dull, closed, stubborn minded people that rejects information from others hate knowledge?
I can't tell you how many times people will come to Matt because of his occupation and ask medical advice from him, and they do not take it. Why ask to begin with if you aren't even going to accept the advice that is given. How long are we going to be closed minded, stubborn headed, people that reject information that is given to us. Whether that information be from the bible, or an older Christian, God places
people and the word to speak into our lives, how long are we going to reject it.
Pro 1:32 For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them;
Being closed, dull, and and stubborn minded will ultimately destroy us. Its time we open up our hearts and minds to the word of God. It's time that we gain wisdom and knowledge so that we can share it with someone else.
Last: You are to determine a theme for proverbs chapter one. Record it in your journal.
My prayer: Father help us to not be arrogant and closed minded. Help us to dig into your word and put on the full armour of God so we will know how to fight our battles, and we will have the wisdom necessary to witness to those around us. Be with us as we go through this study. Help us to open our eyes to what we need to fix in our lives. Help us to not be enticed by sin. I don't want to wallow in my own self pitty, I want to read your word and feel armed and ready at all times. I thank you for what we have learned today. Help us to apply it to our daily walk.

proverbs chapter 1
Pro 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
Pro 1:2 To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight,
Pro 1:3 to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;
Pro 1:4 to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth--
Pro 1:5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,
Pro 1:6 to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.
Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
I am speaking to myself more than anyone. I don't know how often we expect God to fix things in our lives, but we lack the wisdom and understanding because we were to foolish to take the time to read God's word. We want God to fix everything in our lives, but we don't want to do anything for God. We don't want to take time to read his word to gain the wisdom and knowledge that will see us through our everyday life, we don't want to take time to pray, but expect God to take time to take care of all of our problems.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: fools despise wisdom and instruction." How many of us are fools for not getting in the word and obtaining knowledge and wisdom everday.
How can we advise our kids how to live, if we are not learning how to live ourselves? How can God use you, if you do not have the wisdom and the knowledge in which you need to be used?
Pro 1:8 Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching,
Pro 1:9 for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.
Pro 1:10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.
Pro 1:11 If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason;
Pro 1:12 like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
Pro 1:13 we shall find all precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;
Pro 1:14 throw in your lot among us; we will all have one purse"--
Pro 1:15 my son, do not walk in the way with them; hold back your foot from their paths,
Pro 1:16 for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
Pro 1:17 For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird,
Pro 1:18 but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.
Pro 1:19 Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain; it takes away the life of its possessors.
Pro 1:20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice;
Pro 1:21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
Pro 1:22 "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?
Pro 1:23 If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.
Pro 1:24 Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
Pro 1:25 because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof,
Pro 1:26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you,
Pro 1:27 when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.
Pro 1:28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me.
Pro 1:29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD,
Pro 1:30 would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof,
Pro 1:31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices.
Pro 1:32 For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them;
Pro 1:33 but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster."
These passages remind of the instruction that just days ago I told my own child. There is a kid at school that often gets in trouble, and just being around him causes people around him to get in trouble to. We told Zach that he can not hang out with this kid. If he does, he is going to get caught up in his lies, and get in trouble right along with him. But we told him that we should pray for him. Zach prays for this little boy every night. If he chooses not to listen to our instruction and hangs out with this kid, then it will be his fault when he gets in trouble and he will have to suffer the consequences of his actions.
I feel this is what he is saying here.Do not be enticed by sin. Gain wisdom and knowledge, Wisdom surrounds us, it is up to us to gain it and accept it. If we are sitting around all day and we have watched TV, played on the computer, read something other than Gods word, and yet haven't taken the time to dig in the word and pray, then how can we expect God to change our lives?
If we refuse counsel we will eat the fruit of our way. YIKES>>> Not only that but we will have our fill of our own devices. It's your choice to make good and bad decisions. You can't make good decisions without wisdom, you can't gain wisdom without knowledge, without knowledge and wisdom how are you going to get through life?
Pro 1:2 To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight,
Pro 1:3 to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;
Pro 1:4 to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth--
Pro 1:5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,
Pro 1:6 to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.
Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
I am speaking to myself more than anyone. I don't know how often we expect God to fix things in our lives, but we lack the wisdom and understanding because we were to foolish to take the time to read God's word. We want God to fix everything in our lives, but we don't want to do anything for God. We don't want to take time to read his word to gain the wisdom and knowledge that will see us through our everyday life, we don't want to take time to pray, but expect God to take time to take care of all of our problems.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: fools despise wisdom and instruction." How many of us are fools for not getting in the word and obtaining knowledge and wisdom everday.
